The Heater. ©™ Analog Mixbus Enhancer. Patent Pending.

THE HEATER +  is a very special little box which lets you take your stereo bus and run it through analog audio transformers, A preamp saturation circuit, and a over the top diode circuit.  Many of the the vintage recording consoles like Neve, API and SSL pass the 2 mix audio through the center console using transformers.  That’s one of the reasons those consoles sound so warm and punchy. Thats how we came up with the Heater Idea. By Adding the Preamp Saturator and diodes, it gives you so many more variations and possibilities. There is nothing else quite like it!

The Heater +. The hand made, point to point hand wired box that runs your mix bus (or any source you want) through 600 ohm 1:1, isolated audio transformers, Preamp Saturator, and custom Diode Circuit.  Now your DAW mix can REALLY sound like it is going through the center section of a vintage console and way more.

A transformer is a component that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another via inductively coupled conductors — coils of insulated wire wound (most often) around a ferromagnetic core. Transformers are useful in audio recording, as they can block DC voltage and facilitate electrical isolation between gear, but they also shape the sound of signals sent through them by introducing subtle, often very desirable “coloration.” This may be a result of any combination of frequency response, time response, distortion or a number other factors. These effects can be especially attractive when working in the digital realm, where sounds can be perceived as too “cold” or “digital.”

The louder signals are applied to a transformer, the core saturates and clipping occurs. This distortion creates more low-frequency harmonics than high-frequency harmonics, leading to a warm, dense sound. Even at lower than clipping levels, the magnetic properties of the core change slowly, due to hysteresis7, which also leads to extra low-frequency harmonic content. Our transformer design provides its own unique flavor of harmonic coloration.

Somewhat like compression, a near-saturated transformer gives a mix some glue and air, an indescribable filling in of sonic gaps for a more cohesive sound with more character and density. I sometimes run mixes through transformers at unity with no increase in level or saturation just for some of that analog glue.

The Preamp Saturtator is an all analog stereo audio device. When you run your audio signal through the preamp saturator, you are actually preamping the audio.  By adjusting the blend knob , you can add the desired amount of distortion and saturation to the signal. This effect adds depth and color to your audio. You can use it as a direct effect or you can also use it as a parallel effect along with your original signal.  The preamp saturator features an on switch which is basically an in and out switch. It also has a blend knob which lets you adjust how much volume / saturation you want to add. When you turn the blend knob all the way counterclockwise you it also shuts power off to the preamp circuit. It also has an extra stage of saturation by using special clipping diodes in a proprietary circuit.  It is stereo in and out using balanced xlr connectors.

It is great on full mixes, drum buss, bass guitar, electric guitar, vocals. Really anything you can think of. The preamp saturator is our own proprietary design. It is a custom hand wired unit. We test each unit in our world class studio before shipping. We design our own cases using CAD and print them with a strong PLA plastic using 3D Printers.
